As a precision parts manufacturer, Global Precision knows the critical importance of quality assurance and inspection in the manufacturing process. Good quality management systems ensure that our customers receive products that meet their expectations, as well as ensure the safety and quality of the parts that we make. There are many different aspects to quality assurance, as well as several different inspection techniques available that Global Precision takes advantage of, utilizing current technology in order to deliver better quality products to our customers.
Using Automation in Quality
Automation has become increasingly more important for many aspects of manufacturing, quality being one of them. In terms of the manufacturing process, automation allows us to provide far more consistent quality over part batches than possible through manual machining by eliminating human error on menial tasks. At Global Precision, many aspects of quality inspections are maintained and kept compliant with little human interaction through automation. GPP does this through the use of programs on the machine to inspect the parts as they’re being made. They can also collect data that can be used to improve and streamline the process as well as guide preventive maintenance as a proactive way to avoid any potential problems that could occur.
Process Capability (CPK Checks)
Process capability index, or CPK, is a tool used to measure the ability of a manufacturing process to produce a product within the customer’s defined tolerance range. These tests give us insight into how close the process reaches their target tolerance, as well as how consistent the process is in its performance over time. Simply put, it compares the yield processed and losses from a machine or machine group. This tool can then be used to improve the process and implement proactive measures to reduce losses due to part variation.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE)
OEE is a quality metric that examines the productivity of a manufacturing process or facility, looking for the percentage of manufacturing time that is actually ‘productive’. That means producing good quality products as quickly as possible, with no downtime. This allows us to see where we can improve our efficiency and productivity, as well as the areas in which we can improve our quality and how to do so.
Preventative maintenance
Many of the tools and metrics discussed in this are ultimately used in order to develop a proactive approach to quality. By implementing the data that we get from our inspections and metrics, we are able to develop ways to better organize our facility, improve our equipment, and the overall level of quality that we can offer our customers, taking into account potential issues or challenges before they become a major problem. In this way, we offer both better tolerances and more efficient manufacturing services to our customers.
