Hydromat Machining: How Global Precision offers High Volume and High Precision Machining

Over the years, Global Precision Parts, Inc. has sought many different ways to improve the level of precision and quality that we can offer our customers. One of those innovations is in our acquisition of hydromat equipment, a more unique type of machining technology.

What is hydromat machining?

Hydromats are a type of rotary transfer machine, a modular system that contains both horizontally and vertically mounted spindles for more complex machining operations. They get their name from the hydraulically- and CNC-driven motors that power the machine and are designed for large production volumes.

What are the benefits of hydromats?

Hydromat machining is also known as large diameter swiss machining for its ability to precisely machine large-diameter components with complex geometries. This type of equipment offers a length-to-diameter ratio in terms of workpieces that other machines can’t typically accommodate, as well as extremely high precision.

Hydromats are highly versatile as well–for instance, Global Precision uses them to perform a wide range of sequential operations such as cut-off, burnishing, tapping, drilling, milling, and turning. Depending on the number of stations on the machine, one hydromat can perform all of these operations sequentially without needing the downtime that other machines require to swap out tooling and reposition the workpiece. Bar stock is loaded in and machined sequentially, without needing to unload and reload it between operations.

This type of machining operation also accommodates a wide range of materials, sizes, geometries, and shapes. It also often results in finished products that require very little post-processing. Not only does this increase the overall production efficiency for products, eliminating secondary operations, but it also reduces production costs as well.

Hydromat Machining at Global Precision Parts

Global Precision has several hydromats in-house for large-scale orders of complicated or complex products. Our facility can accommodate a variety of materials such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and brass. This equipment allows us to serve the needs of long-run production of complex parts in higher volumes than typical. With hydromat machining, we are able to offer our customers better quality and better precision reliably across large production volumes of parts.
